The story behind Sector 1 Art Gallery starts with the desire of a special person, Andreea Stănculeanu, to bring into the spotlight contemporary artists from the west of Romania. When you add up a smooth collaboration between architect and client, the project becomes beautiful through its simplicity.
The theme was to have a flexible space that would become a background for future exhibitions. The gallery is situated in a fervid space, Combinatul Fondului Plastic, Bucharest.
At a first the space seemed to be unusable due to the advanced state of degradation, so the main facade was removed and rehabilitated. The main door is hand-made at the site to resemble the original one.
For the interior space planning a minimal intervention that would accommodate the most exhibition area was desired. The auxiliary rooms occupy one wall with a light construction. The original wall is left with the existing brick cladding.
Thus, the space becomes a neat background that hosts the gallery’s exhibitions.
The challenge of designing an art gallery comes with the need to have a flexible, neat space while addressing the technical requirements. In the case of Sector 1 gallery, the collaboration between architect-client-constructor resulted in a clean background space that hosts exhibitions.
